After winning the women’s race in the 70km Summer Fast One in Johannesburg, Team Bestmed’s Kristen Louw took time to write down her feelings, recalling how she had achieved her first victory of the year.
When I arrived at the start on Sunday morning I told myself to stay positive, to keep focused on my strategies, and to just enjoy the race.
At the starting line, I found myself surrounded by men and by some competitive female cyclists.
I went out hard from the beginning, trying to keep up with the men at the front. The pace was fast and it was warm from early on.
The moment we got off the tarred road the dust became a challenge.
I had to pace myself for about 8km until the field stretched out.
When we reached the last few kilometres, Karien Alberts, who finished third, had a bad fall just behind me. That reminded me to concentrate and focus on finishing the race.
Some sections of the route was very rocky and I had to pick my lines carefully to avoid punctures. I’m grateful that I had no technical problems and managed to stay hydrated and positive.
I’m happy that I won my first race of the year. It motivated me and I’m excited about the other events on the 2018 calendar.
Now I have to focus on the Barberton MTB Challenge on January 27.
