Kristen Louw joined the Bestmed-ASG’s ladies team and quickly made her mark. She shared her daily routine and discussed how she balances cycling and studies.
My morning routine:
Every day is a new adventure in my life. I am always the early bird catching the worm.
For breakfast, I eat my Futurelife porridge and drink some coffee. When I am done with my breakfast I sneak a cuddle with my little brother until it is time for him to get up for school.
By then it is time for me to get dressed, brush my teeth and make myself pretty for the day ahead.
Before I leave home to fetch my friend, I drink my vitamins and supplements. I go to pick up my friend and then it is off to varsity. I have no specific time to leave home because each day has a different schedule for classes.
My day-to-day routine:
My lectures normally start at around 9am and on most of the days I have long breaks between my various lectures, which makes it possible to put in some extra training. If I am not on the bike I also use the time to relax or catch up on some studies.
On some days I spent the whole day on campus. I would make some time to go to visit my mom and maybe get something from the cafeteria to eat. I also use this time to catch up with my friends.
My classes usually end at 3.45pm and before I go home I drop off my friend.
On the whole, my routine doesn’t change a lot. The only variation is on the weekends or when I have cycling events and holidays.
On racing weekends I normally train with my cycling group, the Turbo Snails.
When I get home:
When I get home I normally change directly into my cycling kit, eat something, fill my bottles and set off to training.
My cycling group normally get together and wait to be briefed by the coach, Oom Frans as we call him, as to what we’ll be doing that day. The group consist mostly of men and I enjoy pushing myself to keep up with them.
Each day of training is an unknown adventure that I take upon myself.
When I get home after hard training sessions I enjoy a hot shower as I hate the smell of sweat.
After my shower my mother’s cooking normally gets the best of me before I settle down to watch my soapies and relax for a while. My favourite soapies are Getroud met rugby and Binnelanders.
Before bed I settle down to do some work and focus on the projects or tests that must be finished for varsity. By 10pm I am fast asleep, dreaming of single tracks and pink mountain bikes.
